Fire investigators are trying to determine how a fatal fire began Saturday in a south side apartment building. Officials said the fire broke out on South 44th Street near the West Kinnickinnic River Parkway just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Cleaning crews worked calmly and carefully Sunday to remove the black smoke. "A call came in a 911 for an apartment fire. Units were dispatched one minute later, and within five minutes (the) first engine company arrived on scene," Milwaukee Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Schutte said. Officials said a 62-year-old Milwaukee man was found dead in his apartment. He was identified Monday as Robert Doney. "I just happened to see on one of the news apps that my apartment was on fire or one of the units in my building was on fire," Wakim Bryant said. Bryant has lived in the building for nearly a year.
