The Police and Fire Commission announced Monday it has appointed a new fire chief for the city.
Interim Wisconsin Rapids Fire Chief Todd Eckes will take over the position left vacant by the retirement of Fire Chief Scott Young in October, according to a news release from the commission. Eckes has been with the Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department for 16 years and became deputy chief in 2019 before becoming interim fire chief with Young's retirement.
Wisconsin Rapids Police and Fire Commission President Bruce King said the commission is happy with the appointment of Eckes to chief. The commission had a strong list of internal candidates, and it was a difficult decision, King said.
"We believe that Chief Eckes is the right person for this important position at this time," King said. "We look forward to continuing to work with him."
