Since the turn of the century, Wisconsin mothers who wanted to turn over their unwanted babies, had to do it in person at hospitals and law enforcement buildings, but lawmakers say it did more harm than good. Now, mothers can do it anonymously. Governor Tony Evers signed a bipartisan bill into law this week. It allows for for the installation of Safe Haven Baby Boxes at hospitals and police and fire stations and hospitals. Mothers can place their baby in the box, and it immediately alerts first responders. The boxes are temperature-controlled and lock as soon as they are closed. Wausau Deputy Fire Chief Jeremy Kopp says it will help them with their mission of keeping the community safe. The bill was introduced by State Representative Ellen Schutt (R-Clinton), she said she was inspired to bring it to the assembly floor by a tragedy that occurred in her community.
