Members of the Sparta Area Fire District spent a good part of the day responding to three fires on Tuesday.
Fire Chief Mike Arnold said the first call came in at 11:31 a.m. for a report of a forest fire on Airedale Avenue.
He said that a landowner was using a torch while working on some farm machinery when he accidentally started some dry vegetation on fire. Before it was put out, the fire burned 1.2 acres. The department was assisted by the Wisconsin DNR.
While at the first fire, another call came in for a controlled burn that got out of control at 9707 Ganderridge Avenue. This fire burned about one acre of land but no buildings.
Then at 2:48 p.m., firefighters were called to La Herradura Restaurant at 701 Industrial Drive.
Chief Arnold said that when they arrived, they could see heavy smoke and fire were coming from the roof and eaves on the north side of the building.
