VIDEO: In a proactive move to enhance fire safety in the community, Milwaukee firefighters conducted door-to-door checks Wednesday for working smoke alarms.
The move comes after an incident Tuesday night, when the Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a severe house fire. Engine 23 and Rescue 1 arrived at the scene to heavy smoke and intense flames on the upper rear floor of a multi-family home.
Despite the firefighters' efforts, one man died and the other person sustained minor injuries.
"Those measures were not successful and that individual who passed. Throughout the fire, we did have one other individual that had minor injuries. He had some burn injuries and was transported to St Mary's. I believe he was an occupant in the same unit. And that kind of sums up just the basics of what happened during the structure fire," Milwaukee Fire Department Assistant Chief Schuyler Belott said.
