VIDEO/PHOTOS: It's Fire Prevention Week and officials say it is an opportunity for first responders to speak to children about the importance of fire safety.
The Onalaska Fire Dept. is taking this week to work with Kindergarten through Second Grade students and teach them fire prevention strategies.
Officials said this year's hot topic is fire safety in the kitchen, because fires started while cooking are very common.
"We are moving into the colder time of the year, especially this week, and we do a little more of the cooking indoors," Lt. Jeremy Southworth said. "Just be cognizant and aware of the different ways we can stay safe while performing those activities and cooking."
Experts said there are three main ways to prevent fires; have a working smoke detector, keep combustible materials away from open flames and always have an emergency evacuation plan in place.
