VIDEO: Some Green Bay students are taking on the role of hydro helpers this winter. First-grade students at St. Bernard Catholic School spent their recess on Thursday inspecting a fire hydrant around the corner from the school. They checked to make sure snow was not covering or blocking the hydrant, there were no leaks, and no litter had been left behind. The students are a part of the Hydro Helpers program with the Green Bay Metro Fire Department, which is designed to teach children about civic duty by adopting a fire hydrant. Lieutenant Shauna Walesh with the department shared her appreciation for the kids at St. Bernard and all hydro helpers, saying, “During those [winter] months, it can be really easy for fire hydrants to get buried within the snow. When that happens, it can delay the response for getting water on fire during an emergency, so these kids throughout the community help not only the fire department but their neighbors as well.”
