VIDEO: Our warm weather is having an impact on many outdoor winter events. That includes the 2nd annual "Smoke Eaters Slam."
It's a fishing derby and fundraiser for the Little Suamico Fire Department. On Thursday morning, it was a place where dwindling ice cover meets waves lapping water.
"At 6 a.m., it was all froze out here yesterday. And now, it's all pretty much wide open. Southwest wind pushed the ice up," said Lieutenant Bob Paneitz.
Lt. Paneitz says the ice conditions have been challenging on parts of the west shore of Green Bay all season.
"I really don't think anybody's really got out much farther than a couple hundred yards here, because as you can see, it's very thin ice," he said.
And that thin ice is what forced officials to cancel the fishing derby portion of Saturday's Smoke Eaters Slam Derby fundraiser at Smulleys on the Bay.
