No people are hurt but four cats are killed in a fire at a duplex on the south side of La Crosse Tuesday afternoon.
Battalion Chief Blane Neher said the call came in at around 1:40 p.m. for a fire at 919 Redfield Street.
Heavy smoke was coming from the one half of the duplex when crews arrived.
Because of the fire, the resident who lived next door was evacuated.
Firefighters who entered the residence found the fire in the kitchen area.
As a crew worked to put out the fire, another searched the home for anyone inside.
No people were found, but firefighters found four cats who died from the heat and smoke of the fire.
Once extinguished, department investigators determined the cause of the fire was from a stove top left on.
