Madison firefighters responded to a mulch fire early Sunday morning at an apartment building on the city's west side. According to a press release, it happened at 17 Coronado Court. People who live in the building say there had been a fire about 45 minutes prior in the location where the mulch meets the building. One person reported they had been smoking in the area earlier that night. They say they believe their cigarette was out before throwing it away, but they were not certain. Firefighters used an extinguisher and water to put out the fire. The estimated area of the burned mulch was approximately three feet by six inches. Firefighters then used a thermal imaging camera and detected a heat profile running along the foundation of the building.
