VIDEO: The people of Portage overwhelmingly chose to have their fire department take over EMS. Results show the referendum passed easily. More than 72% of people who voted said yes. That's 1,076 people. The nays only took in about 28% of the vote with 420 people. "Everybody's been doing their part to do the best thing we can for the citizens," Portage Fire Chief Troy Haase said. Haase said it's been a long year waiting for election day as he tried getting out into Portage as much as possible to answer people's questions on the referendum. "I've met with all the service groups, we've been out canvassing, we did almost everything we could possibly do," Haase said. "I just appreciate people listening and taking in the information." The city currently has a contract with Aspirus. That will be in effect until the end of 2024.
