VIDEO: Dry conditions and strong winds caused a grass fire to get out of control on Tuesday afternoon in Vernon County.
The brush fire happened just off County Rd. NN and Jims Rd. near Coon Valley. The first call came in around 2 p.m. but a MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) call alerted shortly after that asking for help from additional departments.
Coon Valley Fire called for assistance from Shelby, Bergen-Stoddard, Westby Bangor, Genoa, and West Salem Fire Departments.
Officials on scene said with the extra help they were able to tackle the blaze fairly quickly.
"We did have additional units come with water tenders to be able to haul water to extinguish it from the road," Town of Shelby Fire Chief Tony Holinka said. "So, ultimately it wasn't a very difficult fire but I'm not the one dragging hoses up and down hill all afternoon."
