VIDEO: Every winter when conditions are right, volunteers in Eagle River cut nearly 300 blocks of ice from a local lake and stack them into an ice castle. The last ice castle built was 2 years ago and time is running out for this year. The month of December was unusually warm, which is affecting communities like Eagle River. "It seems like it has been happening more often lately," said Eagle River Fire Department Fire Chief Michael Anderson. The city is home to the famous Ice Castle which has been a staple in the community for nearly a century but with the mild winter temperatures the Eagle River Fire Department is unable to work their magic. "We have only been able to build our ice castle three times in the last nine years," said Anderson. Fire Chief Michael Anderson says to have a chance to create their masterpiece, they need at least 13 inches of solid ice.
