VIDEO: Milwaukee's fire department has ignited a new paramedic unit and reopened a firehouse. Officials say southside Fire Station 17, along with its engine company, was closed in 2020 because of budget cuts. Fire Chief Aaron Lipski has said in the past that his department is stretched thin. He says reopening the fire station is a step in the right direction. "This much-needed relief for southside fire companies will provide care to a number of vibrant neighborhoods on the south side," said Chief Lipski. "This station's service area will receive an enhanced response for both fire suppression and emergency medical services with this recommissioning." Fire officials say the city's 2024 budget gives the department a much-needed boost. And the new paramedic unit at Fire Station 36 on the city's north side will help meet the increasing demand for emergency services.
