VIDEO: While the weather outside is warming up, subfreezing temperatures still can affect critical jobs, like the work of firefighters.
According to two firefighters at the Eau Claire Fire Department, the biggest difference between warm weather and cold weather firefighting is speed of their work.
They have to work slower to ensure they don't slip on ice and injure themself, which could make a situation worse.
The cold temperatures can even affect how their equipment works.
"The engines that pump the water to the actual fire need to constantly recirculate water, otherwise the pump itself will freeze," said firefighter and paramedic Aaron Crane.
When snow is involved in cold weather, there can also be a need for firefighters to shovel. That can include shoveling a path to a situation, or moving a snowbank in front of a fire engine in order to get the vehicle closer to an incident.
