VIDEO: Teens from a boys home are dedicating helping shovel out fire hydrants in Richland Center each week. One of the teens is a young cancer patient.
When a Richland Center firefighter posted on Facebook about the need to clear out fire hydrants, Forward Home for Boys jumped into action. The teens are dedicating two hours a week to clearing the snow off over 400 hydrants.
Home director David Fretz believes this task brings the community together, and the same can be said for the boys.
"I think that's the same thing that's true with youth and for older boys is that we're all in it together," Fretz said. "We're all in it to help youth and especially youth that are at risk."
Shoveling can be grueling work on anybody, but one of the teens in the shoveling crew is facing a hidden obstacle -- stage four leukemia lymphoma.
