Teen charged with arson in Sparta Walmart fire

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: A 17-year-old Sparta teen is charged with arson in connection with a fire that caused several million dollars in damage at a Walmart store in late December. Emma R. Smith appeared in Monroe County Circuit Court via Zoom on Monday for her initial appearance in the case. Smith had four charges filed against her including Arson, 1st Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Felony Criminal Damage to Property, and Disorderly Conduct. On the morning of December 26, a fire broke out in one section of the store. No one was hurt in the fire but it did cause more than $7 million in damage according to authorities. The store was closed for several days from the fire. The criminal complaint said that after the fire was extinguished, police and store employees went through surveillance video from before and after the fire started.
