VIDEO: Nearly 50 years after the Rhinelander Fire Department moved into their current building, the cracks are starting to show. Coupled with sinking floors, and parts of the building that firefighters aren't able to access, and Chief Brian Tonnancour says you've got a recipe for disaster.
Tonnancour said, "We've had structural engineers come in, look at it, we've done a lot of testing. We're looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars just to fix the HVAC system in here."
Rhinelander's police and EMS departments, along with city hall, are also facing the same issue of becoming outdated, so city leaders are looking into the idea of a new public safety building that would house all of them under one roof.
He says city leaders are leaving no stone unturned to find a better facility for first responders, and the first step is finding out how to pay for it.
