VIDEO: A Fitchburg family is feeling unbelievably grateful after teens driving by their house helped them escape and prevented a fire from destroying their home on Friday.
19-year-old Oregon resident Mike Wells was driving to Farm and Fleet with two friends when they saw smoke at a home off of County Highway M in Fitchburg.
The three teens stopped, turned around, called 911 and helped the family escape before first responders arrived.
Wells said he couldn’t continue driving by the home, even though he did not know the owners.
”That’s not who I am,” he said. “If I see someone in need, I’m going to help. It doesn’t matter who it is. Whether it’s a house fire, an accident, I’m going to help. I’m not just going to pass by somebody.”
Wells reunited with homeowners Erin and Martin Widmer on Wednesday to share their story with WMTV 15 News.
