With a new paid internship the Madison Fire Department is hoping to fuel the fire young people have for emergency response, while also diversifying their workforce.
The 40 hour-a-week paid internship is targeted at Madison College students getting their Associates Degree in Paramedicine or Fire Science. It'll cover a different topic every quarter for two years.
"So, this is going to get immersed in work on the ambulance, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, (it's) going to get to look at our special operations, it's going to get to look at our prevention inspections, our community engagement, our community prevention programs," Fire Chief Chris Carbon said.
He hopes to give them an avenue and career path to firefighting and EMS. "To discover that this really is an opportunity open to anybody that has the interest level and the passion and wants to work at it."
