Lincoln County is set to give people free in-depth mental health training this spring.
The county's Health and Human Services building will host the first of two planned "mental health first aid" sessions on April 1, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
It's only available for the first 30 adults who sign up, designed to help spot warning signs of mental illness and substance use disorders and give people knowledge on when to start conversations with people who may need them.
Merrill Fire Chief Josh Klug says similar types of training have been offered to their department, and have been important for them while out in the field and in recognizing behaviors in those close to them.
"Mental health is something unlike other physical traits, so when we're assessing a patient, we can see somebody bleeding, we can see somebody having a hard time breathing, but sometimes the mental health piece isn't always known," Klug said.
