VIDEO: An Appleton firefighter who was shot and killed five years ago is being honored with a week of memorial activities. Mitch Lundgaard was shot on May 15, 2019, while rendering aid to a man who suffered a drug overdose on a bus at the Valley Transit Center. He was 36 and a 14-year veteran of the Appleton Fire Department. He left behind a wife and children. The Appleton Fire Department is encouraging people to have red lighting outside their home or business. All six Appleton fire stations are using red exterior lights through May 19. Houdini Plaza and Jones Park are also changing their lighting scheme in support of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. On social media, the Lundgaard family is asking people to celebrate his life with activities every day this week.
