A fire Sunday evening has damaged a silo at a grain mill in Buffalo County. Shortly after 9 p.m., a fire was reported at La Crosse Milling at 105 Highway 35 in Cochrane. The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office said that the fire was in an oat silo and the fire was contained to an auger. The building was evacuated when emergency crews arrived. Firefighters from Tri-County, Alma and Fountain City departments kept the fire contained to the silo. They had to cut a hole in the side to remove the oats so the fire could be extinguished. As a precaution, train traffic on nearby tracks was stopped during the four hours the crews spent at the site putting out the fire. The sheriff's office said an overheating piece of machinery is believed to have caused the fire.
