Votes announced Wednesday morning showed Nutter Fort's Volunteer Fire Department's levy passed. The levy takes part of resident property taxes and puts them towards the department.
Firefighter Patrick Clarks says the incoming money will go towards expenses like new firefighter training, which he says is crucial to keeping volunteer departments staffed.
"That's what it takes to effectively run a fire department," says Clark. "It doesn't matter if you have the best equipment in the world, best gear in the world, or if you run 1,000 calls a year. What matters is you have the people to answer those emergencies."
On top of having funds to keep volunteer departments staffed and properly trained, Nutter Fort VFD is also working to offer new services to Harrison and surrounding counties.
"We see resources that the county needs, like a dive team which we're in the process of building. And we offer a wide array of resources. We don't just fight fires or run car wrecks."
