An early morning fire at a residence in Berkeley Springs on Wednesday is currently under investigation by the West Virginia Fire Marshal's Office.
At approximately 1:24 a.m. Wednesday, the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Truax Drive off of Pious Ridge Road, according to a press release from the company.
Once on scene, firefighters found a one-story, wood frame, single-family dwelling fully involved, with a vehicle and some children’s toys in the driveway.
Lieutenant 1 requested the working fire assignment, which added two additional engines, two additional tankers, a rescue squad and a medic unit, the release said.
"The initial assignment for Engine 12 was to come back the lane and not lay in, so they could prepare for a possible search," the release said.
Officials were informed just prior to the engine's arrival that the home was recently vacant and no one would be inside.
