Five fire departments were on the scene of a fire at an vacant apartment building in Jefferson late Wednesday night. Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department, West Side Volunteer Fire Department, St. Albans Fire Department and South Charleston Fire Department responded to fire next to the former Smiley’s Motel on MacCorkle Ave SW around midnight. The road was shut down for several hours while crews battled the fire. It reopened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning. No injuries were reported. The investigation will be turned over to the State Fire Marshal.
