Man charged with arson in connection with several fires in Manchester


A Manchester man is facing charges in connection with several fires that were believed to be intentionally set. Police said the fires happened early Wednesday morning on Merrimack Street, Middle Street and Pleasant Street. They said all the fires were near residences, and flammable material was found in the vicinity. Police said a propane grill was used in one incident, and items were placed on a deck and ignited in another. During an investigation, police said they established probable cause to arrest Nicholas Knee, 41, on three felony counts of arson and one count of attempted arson. Authorities said the Manchester police and fire departments are investigating other fires that happened in the same area. Injured Hiker Rescued at Pisgah State Park in Hinsdale


On Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at approximately 1:50 p.m., NH Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers responded to Pisgah State Park in Hinsdale about the report of an injured hiker. Victoria Gassett, 24, of Hinsdale was hiking the John Summers Trail when she suffered an injury to her lower right leg. Gassett’s brother and hiking companion was able to call for assistance. Gassett was placed into a litter and carried a short distance to the Kilburn Loop Trail and a waiting Hinsdale Fire Department UTV. She was then driven out to the trailhead, arriving at approximately 4:10 p.m., where she was transferred to a Rescue Inc. Ambulance and transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Agencies responding to assist with the rescue included the Hinsdale Fire Department, Rescue Inc., Hinsdale Police Department, Cheshire County Sheriff’s Department, and the Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid.

Firefighter Of The Year Named In Nashua


Nashua Fire Rescue has officially named its Firefighter of the Year. During the ceremony, which took place Saturday, Steven Phillips — wo has served the department since 2007 — was presented with the 2024 VFW Post 483 Loyalty Day Firefighter of the Year Award at the Nashua Senior Center. Phillips was honored with a speech by Chief of Department Steve M. Buxton that highlighted his "contagious enthusiasm for [the] work, a maturity to navigate the organization and find his place within it, as well as a vast range of technical skills, especially in the area of building construction." A "very humble and extremely generous" person who "takes great pride in being able to assist those in need," Phillips has served on both the SMART Hazmat Team and Dive Team for many years and is assigned to Engine and Ladder Company 2 at the Lake Street Community Fire Station, according to Buxton.
