Southern Oregon battles first wildfire of 2024 as Little Yamsay Fire scorches 6,300 acres

The first wildfire of the 2024 season is burning in southern Oregon. The Little Yamsay Fire began almost a month ago when thunderstorms moved through the area. The fire is located about 25 miles southeast of Chemult. As of Monday morning, the fire has scorched just about 6,300 acres. The fire is 30% contained, officials said. While the firefighters are using techniques similar to prescribed burns, officials tell KATU News that allowing natural fire in the forest is important. “Utilizing natural starts to re-introduce fire to the landscape, at the right place and the right time, is a shift in land management practice that is exceedingly important if we are to return the West’s forests to a level of health and resilience that can withstand drought, increasingly unpredictable and hot summers, and large fast-moving fires,” South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership said.

Fire severely damages Fifty Licks Ice Cream shop in Northeast Portland

A fire severely damaged Fifty Licks Ice Cream at its Northeast Portland location at East Burnside and 28th Avenue on Friday morning. Portland Fire & Rescue said the fire spread from the basement up to the top floor of the 100-year-old building. Fire crews said the building layout and thick smoke made it tough to find the source and put it out. Several apartments and two other businesses, a salon and a vintage shop, in the building were also damaged. No one was injured and fire crews rescued a cat from one of the apartments. Chad Draizin, the owner of Fifty Licks, said fire crews went above and beyond to help his store. "The firefighters were in there slogging through the wet, doing a bucket brigade, rescuing our ice cream, and loading it into our ice cream truck. They invented the bucket brigade and they have it perfected," he said.
