Two new hazardous material detection devices coming to Charleston first responders

The Charleston Fire Department is working to update its hazardous material detection and identification devices after 7 years. The fire department is working for city approval to submit the 2023 Assistance to Firefighter Grant. The grant funds the necessary needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. Fire officials say they plan to use the grant to update their older devices with two new technologies that detect hazardous materials quickly. Faster detection gives first responders less exposure time to dangerous elements. Fire officials say the devices are used in high-risk and low-frequency emergencies like highway transportation, rail incidents and port scenes.
