Roanoke Fire-EMS Captain named National Firefighter of the Year


VIDEO: A Roanoke Fire-EMS captain has been named the National Firefighter of the Year. “He’s dedicated. He’s a team player, he’s a mentor to a lot of our younger firefighters,” said Roanoke Fire-EMS Deputy Chief Andy Foley. Thursday, Captain Peter Matthiessen received the National Firefighter of the Year award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. “It means a lot to our organization that someone within the organization, especially an officer, has been recognized nationally for a national award for something that he’s worked so hard on, and put a lot of his selfless time into that,” said Foley. Captain Matthiessen is recognized for his dedication and contributions to the community. One of his contributions is the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

Shed engulfed in flames in Arlington County


Arlington County Fire and EMS crews were at the scene of a shed fire on Friday morning. Just before 9 a.m., fire officials said the fire was in the 1100 block of N Lexington Street. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a shed fully engulfed in flames. They advised residents and commuters to avoid the area and seek an alternate route. The fire was put out by 9:08 a.m. Despite the magnitude of the fire, Arlington County Fire and EMS said no surrounding structures were damaged. Units worked to clear the scene before it was turned over to the Office of the Fire Marshal for investigation.

Fire tears through Caroline County garage


PHOTOS: A Tuesday evening fire in the Ladysmith Village subdivision in Caroline County did serious damage to a garage. According to Caroline Fire Rescue & Emergency Management, firefighters responded to the subdivision just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, for report of a structure fire. When they arrived at the home, they found a garage fully involved in fire, with thick smoke pouring from the front of the structure. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, which did not spread beyond the garage. According to fire officials, the occupant and their pets were not injured. They were able to escape safely because neighbors made them aware of the fire.

Three injured in Appomattox County crash


Three people were injured in a Tuesday crash in Appomattox County, according to the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department. According to firefighters, crews were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. to reports of a crash in the 5000 block of Red House Rd. Deputies from the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office extricated one person from the crash and performed first aid until the Appomattox County Rescue Squad arrived. Two additional people were extricated from the crash by firefighters. Firefighters say one of the cars caught fire, but flames were extinguished by a bystander before crews arrived. Firefighters thank the bystander, Appomattox Rescue, Delta Response Team, Appomattox Sheriff’s Office, Red House Volunteer Fire Department, Public Safety Dispatchers, Virginia State Police, and VDOT for their assistance.
