Norfolk man finds World War II style grenade in backyard

Andrew Taunton has quite the memorable keepsake after what he called a crazy Saturday afternoon. He told 10 On Your Side he made an unexpected discovery while digging up a shrub in his backyard. “I was finding little rocks, little river rocks and I ended up picking up one of them and was like, well that shape’s not a rock,” Taunton said. He was holding a World War II style pineapple grenade. The top of it where the pin should’ve been was cut off. Just to be safe he called the non-emergency line and was surprised by the large response. “Ladder truck, hose truck, fire marshal ended up being out here. The bomb squad was out here. There were probably half a dozen or about a dozen cops between both sides.”

Roanoke County hosting firefighter training classes ahead of 2025 station opening

VIDEO: The goal is to make sure firefighters are fully prepared and can handle an emergency, especially in rural parts of Roanoke County. It’s why the county is hosting several training academies to ensure a new fire station is fully staffed when it opens next year. James Woodard, a recruit, comes from a family of public servants. “Many grandparents and great grandparents who were volunteer firefighters,” Woodard said. For Woodard to serve the community after nearly a decade in the Navy, it was an easy decision for him to join a firefighting training academy. “I’m very honored, to be able to do that, to be hired to be able to continue that tradition,” Woodard said. Woodard is one of about 20 recruits training to become firefighters in the Roanoke Valley.
