Fire damages part of Avon apartment complex; two firefighters injured

VIDEO: A fire damaged part of an apartment complex in Avon over the weekend and the cause is under investigation. Firefighters responded to a report of an exterior fire on Avonwood Road around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Large flames and thick black smoke could be seen coming from a porch at one of the apartments on the building. “They're porches that are built into the building so it seemed to be on a porch area, but it got up into the roof area of that one apartment on the third floor. So it's a void between the third floor and the roof. It's a flat roof. And it got into that void space and it started running the void space," said Avon Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bruce Appell. The location of the fire created challenges for the firefighters.

2nd fire destroys country club in West Hartford

VIDEO: Firefighters were called to the Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford Sunday, just a day after a heavy fire in the building was extinguished Saturday, according to town Fire Chief Greg Priest. The fire, reported nearly 24 hours after fire crews were first called to Wampanoag Drive, consumed a "majority of the structure" and caused partial structural collapses "throughout the entire building," Priest said. No one was hurt as a result of the fire, and Priest said that there was no information to suggest anyone had been inside the building at the time. According to Priest, firefighters received a report at 2:18 a.m. from a nearby resident that fire was visible from the top of the Wampanoag Country Club building. A fire crew arrived at 2:23 a.m. and called for additional fire crews after finding a heavy fire through the roof.

1 hospitalized after house fire in Manchester

Fire officials say one person was hospitalized due to burns sustained in a house fire Thursday morning. Police said the fire occurred on the 200 block of Eldridge Street around 7:30 a.m. Upon arrival, fire crews found fire on the second floor of a single-family home. They reported bringing it under control in 10 minutes. One occupant sustained non-life threatening injuries - including “minor” burns - and was transported to a local hospital. No other injuries were reported. There were road closures in the area during the fire and police asked residents to avoid the area. The roads reopened just before 9 a.m. The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. The home was deemed uninhabitable for the time being and the Red Cross is assisting two displaced adult residents.

Peer support team helps Wallingford firefighters with processing service call responses

A deadly blaze in Wallingford prompted the town's fire department to activate its peer support team. It’s to help firefighters process what they witness on scene. As Wallingford firefighters respond to an emergency call, the crew inside is also getting help if they need it when they return. “It’s first responders helping first responders.” Deputy Chief Samuel Wilson said his firefighters are committed to serving the town, but certain calls can take a toll mentally, carrying the stress and burden of what they may see at scenes. “Nothing will ever substitute from the experiencing of actually having to live it yourself. It’s unfortunate, but it’s necessary in our profession,” he said. Wilson said the department has a peer support team to help firefighters sort out any feelings or emotions they may have before going back on duty.
