An investigation is under way Thursday after at least two manholes exploded in Brookline. The explosions happened near the intersection of Route 9 and Cypress Street Wednesday night. One blast blew out the front window at a Brigham administrative building. The other sent the manhole cover flying at the corner of Brington Road. No injuries were reported. Brookline Fire Department Deputy Chief Pat Canney said there was an odor of gas in the neighborhood, which he believes caused the explosion. At this time officials don't know what the ignition source was. National Grid and Eversource crews joined police and firefighters on scene, venting the manholes and evacuating businesses and some homes. "I heard an explosion just after 6 o'clock in the Brookline/Coolidge Corner area, and then about five minutes later, a second one," Sheila Drakeley said.
