A massive fire in a Commercial Street apartment building left six families without a home Wednesday night.
The Whitman Fire Department responded to a report of a fire inside a second-floor apartment at 316 Commercial St. about 7:47 p.m.
Deputy Chief Joseph Feeney told The Enterprise at the scene that everyone who lived in the building escaped, and that no one was hurt.
Whitman firefighters and firefighters from 16 other towns battled the blaze for more than three hours. It took about two hours to extinguish just the bulk of the flames. As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, the fire had not been fully extinguished. Feeny said said the fire was a challenging one.
“It’s a very stubborn fire, because of the age and the layout of the building,” Feeney said.
