Local police and firefighters and state Environmental Police and wildlife officials worked together Monday afternoon to rescue a deer that was trapped in the Western Canal. The deer was removed from the portion of the canal bounded by Broadway, Lewis, Suffolk and Jefferson streets about 1:20 p.m. Lowell Fire Chief Jeff Winward said firefighters were called to the scene by state Environmental Police about 12:30 p.m. He said Environmental Police used their own boat to enter the canal while firefighters stood by as backup with the department's Zodiac boat. Winward said the deer was shot with a tranquilizer to aid in its removal from the water. "It became semi-conscious and they were able to capture it," he said. The deer was wrapped in a red rescue tarp with several handles. Police and firefighters helped lift the deer up over a railing and onto the sidewalk on the Lewis Street side of the canal.
