A doe was able to return freely to the West Gloucester woods Thursday morning after a Gloucester Fire Department crew rescued the animal after it fell through ice on Fernwood Lake. Deputy Chief Tom LoGrande said firefighters received a call at 8:07 a.m. from a passerby that a deer was struggling after falling into the icy lake waters off Fernwood and Essex avenues. The Police Department's animal control unit initially responded, LoGrande said, but quickly ascertained that the ice was too dangerous to support several rescuers trying to rush to the deer's rescue, and waited for firefighters to arrive. A crew from the West Gloucester station arrived with a ladder truck and used the ladder to extend firefighter Jak Letien out over the ice to begin the rescue attempt. The doe, estimated to weigh 150 pounds, was some 80 yards from shore.
