Twenty-six area residents representing 18 volunteer fire departments throughout Western Massachusetts successfully completed the state Fire Academy training program and are now ready to serve in their communities. State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Director David C. Evans presented certificates of completion to the 24 men and two women at commencement ceremonies Wednesday night at the academy’s Springfield campus. The Call/Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training Program offers the same training offered to full-time firefighters. But because many of those in volunteer departments have full-time jobs, the training is offered at nights and weekends.
