Oak Bluffs firefighters quickly put out a house fire on Alpine avenue Monday afternoon. The call came in at 3 p.m. and the scene was cleared at 3:45 p.m., fire chief John Rose said. There were no injuries. Chief Rose said a captain in the fire department was driving on Barnes Road when he spotted the fire on Alpine just off Barnes and called it in. There was heavy black smoke and flames coming from the back side of the building, the chief said. One person was home at the time of the fire, and reported hearing a popping sound outside. Chief Rose said he was unsure what the popping sound was, but believes that the fire originated in two trash barrels that were leaning against an exterior wall of the house. He said that flames climbed from the barrels up the exterior wall of the house, then ignited the shingles and spread into the interior of the house through a small attic space.
