The Indian Orchard home that caught fire overnight has been declared a total loss, according to a fire department spokesman.
The cause of the fire is unknown but is under investigation, said Capt. Drew Piemonte, aide to Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi.
Seven residents, including four children, were sent to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, he Piemonte.
Firefighters rescued two dogs and three cats from the flames. The fire was out as of 8 a.m., Piemonte said, but firefighters will remain on the scene for the next several hours. Water Street in Indian Orchard, which runs parallel to the Chicopee River, is closed to all traffic.
The home is heavily charred inside and outside. The roof has collapsed, and a vehicle in the driveway appears to have been destroyed.
