Selectmen on Tuesday said they would place an article on the May Town Meeting warrant that would officially make them the municipality’s fire commissioners. Currently, selectmen act as the police commission, meaning hiring decisions for all officers must be approved by the board. That’s not the case for the fire department. Only the fire chief is appointed by selectmen. All firefighters are appointed directly by the fire chief. Police Chief Shawn Crevier said during Tuesday’s meeting that the system works well for his department. But acting Fire Chief Chris Gagnon told selectmen the current system for hiring firefighters should remain the way it is, and urged the board not to change it.
