Public safety officials saved a black Labrador Retriever which fell through the ice on the Connecticut River Sunday morning. People reported that Buddy the dog fell through thin ice on the Connecticut River near McClelland Farm Road at 10 a.m., police said. The Deerfield Fire and Police departments and Turners Falls Fire Department responded to the call for help and Deerfield Fire Chief Darren Melnik found the dog mostly submerged and clinging to the ice with his front paws, police said. Turners Falls Fire Capt. Kyle Cogswell crawled onto the ice wearing an ice rescue suit while fellow firefighters held onto a rope attached to the suit. He was able to lift Buddy from the water and bring him safely to the shore. “Buddy was reunited with his family and transported back to his home by Deerfield Police,” police said.
