Amherst Fire Chief Walter 'Tim' Nelson announces retirement after over four decades of service

After more than forty years of dedicated service, Amherst Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson has announced his retirement from the Town of Amherst, effective June 30, 2024. Chief Nelson, who has led the Amherst Fire Department since 2009, leaves behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to public safety and community service. Town Manager Paul Bockelman expressed deep appreciation for Chief Nelson’s leadership, stating, “Fire Chief Nelson has been a pillar of strength and integrity in our community for over a decade. His tireless dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents has been exemplary.” Chief Nelson’s journey in the fire service began in 1981 when he joined the Holyoke Fire Department as a young recruit.
