VIDEO: The Springfield Fire Department secured apparel that offers additional protection from carcinogenic particulates.
Cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters. These garments can create a barrier between the skin and these carcinogens. In addition to dust, smoke and particulates, the protective gear firefighters wear is coated with PFAS, a class of chemicals linked to an increased risk of cancer. The Springfield Fire Department received a grant for $44,000 from the Last Call Foundation to secure undergarments that create a barrier and prevent 50 to 80 percent of airborne carcinogenic particulates and moisture from coming in contact with skin. Each of the 258 firefighters will receive two of these garments. They are made in the Commonwealth by a company called 9 Alarm Apparel.
