Charlevoix Township voters on Tuesday approved a $1.85 million bond proposition to build a new firehouse.
Township residents voted 616-313 to construct the fire department's new headquarters, which officials said is long overdue.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Dan Thorp, Charlevoix Township fire chief. “It means a lot to see our community is behind this project.”
It will use no more than $1.85 million to construct and equip a new township fire hall, taking about 15 years to pay off.
The levy will be an average of 0.9774 mill, or $0.9774 per $1,000 of taxable value in the first year, and an average of 0.9774 mill, or $0.9774 per $1,000 of taxable value each following year.
Firefighters decided to ask voters to help move this project forward because what was sufficient in 1974 no longer meets the needs in 2018.
