A 59-year-old woman died in a home explosion in Southgate Aug. 22. Members of the Southgate Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a residence in the 13400 block of Cunningham Street around 9:30 a.m. after receiving word of the blast, which started a fire and damaged the home next door. Southgate Public Safety Director Jeffrey Smith said the homeowner was found deceased in the back bedroom of the home, where she lived by herself. He said it wasn’t a gas explosion, but rather that it was likely related to the woman’s oxygen tanks. “At this point, the explosion is probably caused by the oxygen in the home,” he said. “But obviously that’ll be under investigation until the arson team can get in there and do their work.”
