It’s literally one of a kind, and Hadley Township Fire Chief Kurt Nass says his department’s shiny new pumper truck is the “future of firefighting” and the department is excited to show off the new vehicle. Nast said since his department tries to get 24-25 years out of each of its vehicles. “We don’t want to order what he need right now,” said the chief, and instead they try to think of what they’ll need 10-15 years from now. Nass believes they have it in the department’s new Spencer pumper truck built in South Haven in southwest Michigan. In the new truck when the operator slides up the door to the pump control panel there aren’t a lot of gauges and nobs. Instead, there’s a small black computer screen. Nass said Hadley’s new truck is the first pumper in the United States with the SAM (Scene Apparatus Management) System. In April, the control panel for Hadley’s new truck was on display at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) International conference in Indianapolis. Since then, said Nass, he has received calls from as far away as Japan from firefighters hoping to get a closer look.
