Waterford’s police and fire departments have been approved to purchase new vehicles and an engine by the township’s board of trustees. The Waterford Police department will be replacing three marked patrol fleet vehicles and two unmarked police vehicles used for surveillance and undercover work. The cars are between nine and 10-years old, according to Scott Underwood, chief of police, costing $176,153 to replace all five. The older patrol and unmarked vehicles will be sold at auction while the new ones are rotated into the fleet. While the new police vehicles are being paid for with drug forfeiture funds, the Waterford Regional Fire Department is utilizing the township’s new special assessment district for police and fire to purchase a new fire engine. Last August, voters approved the district and new tax which is expected to generate $6,024,610 this year.
