The Zavala boys – Juan, Ramiro and Manolo – were excited about Halloween, chattering to family members about the costumes they planned to wear.
"They had just left my house a few hours before the incident happened," said Amelia Wallace, the boys' aunt. "The whole time they were there, Ramiro kept saying, 'Halloween is in two days, Halloween is in two days.'" That was Tuesday night. Early Wednesday morning, the boys were killed when fire swept through their north Lansing home. Four other family members were injured, including the boys' mother, Alyssa Wallace, and their 18-month-old sister, Ariella.
Wallace's fiance, Ray Reynero, and his 5-year-old daughter, Apolonia, are in intensive care at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Alyssa Wallace and her daughter were treated and released at a Lansing hospital.
