The fire station at Battle Creek's airport was closed last week by the city but officials say they don't expect a reduction in service.
Battle Creek began staffing the fire station at Battle Creek Executive Airport at Kellogg Field in 2014, assuming firefighting duties from the Air National Guard, which stopped funding firefighting because the base no longer had a flying wing.
The city trained and placed firefighters at the station on the Air Guard side of the airport and assumed firefighting for the entire airport.
But six years later Fire Chief Brian Sturdivant said he needed to make adjustments.
"It was about providing efficiency for the system," he said Wednesday, because the firefighters assigned to the airport were unable to leave to answer other calls.
