A fire possibly caused by a wood burning stove destroyed a workshop/meeting room and damaged the adjacent home of Jim and Ida Eichler at 1275 Jonesville Road Thursday morning. The fire was reported at 7:45 a.m. Just as the first Quincy truck arrived a 55 gallon drum of gasoline exploded sending a fireball over 100 feet in the air. Quincy Fire Chief Mike Sherman said the single story workshop was fully engulfed and had spread to the adjacent two story wood framed home 10 feet to the north. “Flames were coming out from under the eaves. The roof was destroyed but we saved the house and much of the belongings,” Sherman said. Mutual aid was requested for manpower and tankers from the Coldwater, Litchfield and Allen Fire Departments. Sherman said the cause is under investigation but was likely the wood stove in the rear of the workshop.
